Newcastle retro shirts tell the story of a club through its black and white stripes. Each era brought new heroes, new hope and a new shirt to wear with pride. Now three of the best are back in stock together. First comes the 1980-82 home shirt from the Arthur Cox years. Next is the 1993-95 home shirt of Keegan and Cole. Finally, there is the 1999-2000 home shirt from Bobby Robson’s first season.
In addition, the three shirts fit together like chapters in one book. The first shows the rebuild, the second the rise, and the third the homecoming. As a result, each one means something different to every fan. So which era is yours?
Newcastle started the eighties in the Second Division. Supporters wanted a return to the top flight, and they wanted it fast. However, the club needed a fresh start first. That came in 1980, when Arthur Cox took over as manager.
Cox built a side that worked hard and gave young players a chance. The most famous of them was Chris Waddle, who joined from non-league Tow Law Town in 1980. Soon, his dribbling had fans on the edge of their seats. Meanwhile, Imre Varadi arrived in 1981 and brought pace and goals. Then, in 1982, Kevin Keegan signed as a player, and the whole city was buzzing. Promotion finally followed in 1984.
The shirt itself is pure early eighties. Bold stripes run from collar to hem, framed by a neat black collar and cuffs. The crest sits on the left of the chest. In short, it is clean, simple and timeless.
Keegan returned as manager in 1992 and led the team to the First Division title in 1992-93. After that, Newcastle stepped up to the Premier League with real ambition. Few people expected them to challenge the top clubs so quickly. However, they finished third in 1993-94 and booked a place in Europe.
Andy Cole was the star of the show. He scored 41 goals in all competitions that season, a club record. Alongside him, Peter Beardsley returned in 1993 and brought vision and clever movement. Rob Lee drove the team from midfield. Later, Newcastle opened their 1994-95 UEFA Cup run with a 5-0 win at Royal Antwerp. Rob Lee scored a hat-trick that night.
This is one of the most loved Newcastle retro shirts of all. Bold stripes run from collar to hem. In the middle of the chest sits the blue Newcastle Brown Ale star. For many fans, that star is part of the club’s identity from this era.
The 1999-2000 season started badly under Ruud Gullit. Then a home derby defeat to Sunderland on a wet August night sealed his fate. Within days, he resigned, and Newcastle sat near the foot of the table.
In September 1999, Bobby Robson was named manager. He was a Durham lad who grew up supporting the Magpies. His impact was immediate. In his first home game, Newcastle beat Sheffield Wednesday 8-0, and Alan Shearer scored five. Next, the team climbed the table with new confidence. They also reached the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley, where Chelsea won 2-1.
Shearer led the line all season. Behind him, Gary Speed brought energy, Nolberto Solano supplied the crosses and Shay Given kept goal. The shirt keeps everything fans love, with bold stripes, the sponsor across the chest and the crest on the left.
Want a hero on the back? Simply use the Customise tab and leave instructions in the note box at checkout. For example, popular choices for the 1980-82 shirt are WADDLE 11 and VARADI 9. Similarly, fans of the 1993-95 shirt often pick COLE 9, BEARDSLEY 8 or LEE 7. For the 1999-2000 shirt, SHEARER 9, SPEED 11 and GIVEN 1 are favourites. Alternatively, add your own name and a number that means something to you.
All three shirts have a slim retro fit, just like the originals. Therefore, we always recommend ordering one size up. That way, you get a comfortable fit that still looks the part. In addition, they all work away from the stadium. For instance, they look great with jeans and trainers, at five-a-side or in the pub on match day.
These shirts are back by popular demand, but stock is limited. Once this run sells out, a restock can take a while. So if you missed them last time, now is your chance. Better still, why not collect all three eras?
