Mexico 2004-06 Retro Shirts: Back by Popular Demand

The Mexico 2004 retro shirts are back, and you left us no choice. Since they sold out, they have been among the most requested shirts in our inbox. So today, both the green home and the white away return to the site.

Before you grab one, here is why this era still means so much to Mexico fans.

Why the Mexico 2004 Retro Shirts Still Matter

Mexico have produced plenty of famous shirts. However, the 2004–06 designs hit a sweet spot that few kits ever reach. They are clean and modern, yet they still feel unmistakably Mexican.

The timing matters too. This was the start of the Ricardo La Volpe era. As a result, El Tri played some of the most confident, possession-based football in their history. Many fans in their thirties grew up watching this team. For them, these shirts are pure nostalgia.

The La Volpe Era: Copa América 2004

La Volpe took charge in 2002 and quickly built a team with a clear identity. Mexico kept the ball, pressed high and attacked with intent. Above all, they refused to be intimidated by bigger names.

That attitude showed at the 2004 Copa América in Peru. Mexico beat Argentina 1-0 in the group stage and finished top of their group. Eventually, Brazil ended their run in the quarter-finals. Even so, the message was clear: this Mexico side could live with anyone.

Germany 2005: Borgetti Beats Brazil

A year later, Mexico arrived at the 2005 Confederations Cup in Germany. First, they beat Japan 2-1. Then came the result every fan remembers.

Against Brazil, Jared Borgetti rose to head home the only goal of the game. Brazil had Ronaldinho, Adriano and Kaká, but Mexico still won 1-0. Consequently, El Tri topped their group ahead of the eventual winners.

In the semi-final, Mexico drew 1-1 with Argentina after extra time. Sadly, they lost the shootout. Afterwards, they also lost a thrilling third-place play-off against hosts Germany. Still, fourth place against that field felt like a statement.

The Players Who Made These Shirts Famous

Every great shirt needs great names on the back. Fortunately, this era had plenty.

  • Jared Borgetti – the aerial threat and Mexico’s goalscorer of the generation.
  • Rafael Márquez – the elegant captain, who was starring for Barcelona at the time.
  • Pavel Pardo – the calm midfield metronome who made La Volpe’s system tick.
  • Oswaldo Sánchez – the reliable, vocal goalkeeper behind it all.

Want one of these names on your shirt? Simply use the Customise tab on the product page. Then leave your instructions in the note box at checkout. BORGETTI 9 is always a winner.

Home or Away? Inside the Mexico 2004 Retro Shirts

The home shirt is the classic. It features a rich green body with a white collar and a red inner neck. In addition, fine red piping runs down the front, while white flashes and red cuffs finish the sleeves. All three flag colours sit together on one shirt.

The away shirt is the minimalist choice. Crisp white sets off a green ribbed collar and sweeping green piping. Meanwhile, the crest sits in the centre of the chest for a clean, balanced look. It pairs easily with jeans, so it works just as well off the pitch.
